Aberdare National Park | The Majestic Moorlands

Aberdare National Park

The Majestic Moorlands

Escape to the misty peaks and deep ravines of the Aberdare Range. A landscape of spectacular waterfalls, ancient rainforests, and high-altitude moorlands where the air is crisp and the wildlife is as elusive as it is magnificent.

The Experience

Park Highlights

Known as the “Majestic Moorlands,” the Aberdares provide a unique montane ecosystem vastly different from the typical African savanna.

Aberdare Landscape

Thundering Waterfalls

Home to some of Kenya’s most impressive drops, including the Karuru Falls, which plunge 273 meters in three spectacular tiers.

Royal History

Visit the site of the famous Treetops Hotel, where Princess Elizabeth ascended to the British throne following the death of her father.

Rare Species

A sanctuary for the elusive Bongo antelope, giant forest hogs, and melanistic leopards often spotted in the higher altitudes.

The Salient & Moorlands

Contrast the dense rainforests of the lower ‘Salient’ with the alpine lichen-covered trees of the high-altitude moorlands.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (Jan – Mar)

The best time for hiking and trout fishing. Road access to the high-altitude moorlands is most reliable during these sunny months.

Cool Season (June – Sept)

Mist and fog create an ethereal atmosphere. While cooler, it is excellent for wildlife viewing at the park’s salt licks.

Rainy Season (April – May)

The waterfalls are at their most powerful. Note that 4WD vehicles are essential as many mountain tracks become challenging.
