The Experience

Park Highlights

Spanning nearly 22,000 square kilometers, the Tsavo ecosystem offers a rugged landscape where the Galana River cuts through prehistoric lava flows and hippos wallow in crystal clear springs.

Tsavo Red Elephants

The Red Elephants

In Tsavo East, elephants are famous for their unique red hue, a result of dusting themselves in the park’s nutrient-rich volcanic soil.

Mzima Springs

A lush oasis in Tsavo West where fifty million gallons of crystal-clear water gush out daily, home to hippos, crocodiles, and an underwater viewing tank.

Mudanda Rock & Yatta Plateau

Tsavo East hosts the world’s longest lava flow, the Yatta Plateau, and Mudanda Rock—a natural lookout over a watering hole frequented by hundreds of animals.

Shetani Lava Flow

Meaning “devil” in Swahili, this jagged black lava field in Tsavo West serves as a stark reminder of the region’s recent volcanic past.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (July – Oct)

The best time for game viewing. Vegetation is thin and wildlife congregates around the few remaining water sources like the Galana River.

Cool Season (Dec – Feb)

Excellent weather with pleasant temperatures. Great for birdwatching and exploring the volcanic caves of Tsavo West without the heat.

Green Season (April – June)

The landscape is stunningly lush and emerald green. While some roads are challenging, it is the quietest time with zero crowds.
