The Sourcing Deep Dive

Bridging the Gap Between the Savannah and the Cupping Table

A true “Coffee Safari” represents a fundamental business asset. We bypass standard mass tourism to lead roasters directly onto the red volcanic soils of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Range, and Rift Valley high-altitude highlands. We provide an end-to-end gateway from cherry selection straight to dry-mill shipping documents.

By visiting the wet mills (factories) during the peak of the main crop harvest, you gain uncompromised transparency. Evaluate raw lot selections, analyze drying bed protocols, and engage with cooperative smallholders. Once origin work wraps, transition smoothly into private 4×4 deep-wilderness safaris tracking lions and leopards under the guidance of KPSGA gold-rated naturalists.

Sourcing Cycles & Calendars

Main Crop Harvest & Milling Oct – Dec

Peak harvest in Central Kenya (Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu). Witness pulp operations, fermentation channels, and skin-drying beds in full swing.

Peak Cupping & Shipping Jan – April

Our recommended travel window. Coffee rests in parchment and is milled. Evaluate freshly prepared lot offers inside modern Nairobi SCA labs.

Fly Crop Harvesting May – July

Secondary smaller harvest. Great for specialty roasters seeking late-season fresh micro-lot arrivals or estate blending components.

Processing Chemistry

The Legendary “Kenya Double-Wash”

The sparkling phosphoric acidity and pristine cleanliness of a Kenyan cup is achieved through an elite, meticulous double-fermentation protocol.

1

Dry Fermentation (24–48 Hours)

Freshly pulped parchment rests in fermentation tanks. Natural microflora break down the dense mucilage layer under shade controls.

2

Grading Channels & Washing

Parchment is pushed down masonry wash channels. Dense, high-density AA and AB grade beans sink to the bottom and are separated from lighter floaters.

3

The 24-Hour Soak

Clean, cold mountain water is pumped into secondary soak tanks. This final underwater soak matures the amino acids, giving the coffee its distinct bright blackberry and currant notes.

Micro-Lot Sensory Profile Simulator

Simulate cup scores based on variety and processing quality.

Est. SCA Cup Score 88.25
Primary Descriptors Blackberry, Sparkling Currant, Lemon verbena

The Direct-Trade Transparency Ledger

Specialty coffee is only sustainable when smallholder wet mills receive fair compensation. Our direct-trade supply chain completely bypasses predatory middlemen.

Conventional auction models often return less than 50% of the FOB (Free on Board) export price back to the actual wet mill washing stations, after multiple agent commissions are deducted. By buying directly through our fully vetted cooperative channels, we guarantee a minimum of 80% to 85% of FOB prices return straight to the farmgate level.

Technical Sourcing FAQs

Essential logistics, shipping timelines, and origin travel guidelines answered by our Nairobi export operations team.

For highly customizable micro-lots, the standard minimum order quantity is one pallet (approx. 10 bags of 60kg each). However, we can group different micro-lots to fill a full container load (FCL) of 320 bags or coordinate partial container shipments (LCL) via vetted consolidators to your target importing port.

All coffee is packed in grain-pro bags inside protective burlap and transported securely by train via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) directly from Nairobi inland dry depots to the Port of Mombasa. Standard transit times from Mombasa range from 25 to 35 days to European ports, and 35 to 45 days to North American east/west coast terminals.

The absolute premium cupping window inside our Nairobi laboratory starts in mid-January and extends through late April. This is when the main crop harvest has completed its drying process and finished its minimum 6-week resting phase in clean parchment warehouse stores.

All travelers must secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online prior to departure. Yellow Fever vaccination certificates are required if entering from endemic zones, and standard anti-malarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended for safari extensions. Our Nairobi concierge office coordinates full detailed preparation briefs.

Generally, yes. Sourcing trips that involve active direct trade selection, contract negotiations, coffee lab work, and cooperative farm audits represent valid business travel expenses. Our office issues complete structured, auditable itemized receipts detailing the business allocation breakdown.
