The Matthews Range
Kenya’s Legendary Sky Island Wilderness & Ancient Cycad Sanctuary
“Rising dramatically out of the sun-bleached plains of Samburu land, the Matthews Range—the Lenkiyio Hills—forms a 150-kilometer isolated island of lush montane cloud forest. Here, crystal-clear streams tumble over granite cliffs, ancient cycads stand as living fossils, and wild herds wander through a completely untouched wilderness.”
The Geography of the Sky Island
The Matthews Range runs from north to south, acting as a massive biological barrier in the semi-arid Samburu landscape of northern Kenya. Reaching elevations of up to 2,375 meters, this range traps moisture moving across the dry northern deserts. This unique dynamic fosters dense, high-altitude cloud forests, freshwater springs, and pockets of unique microclimates completely isolated from the arid lowlands below.
Crystal Mountain Streams
Unlike the surrounding bone-dry wilderness, the peaks of the Matthews Range feed year-round, cold mountain springs that run into natural stone basins, creating refreshing rock pools.
Freshwater OasesNamunyak Valley Basin
Hugging the eastern slopes is the massive Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy. It acts as a crucial corridor for trans-northern elephant movements between Mount Kenya and Samburu.
Community Conservation BeltThe Singing Wells Sector
At the base of the range, seasonal sand rivers hide deep groundwater. Here, Samburu herders excavate hand-dug wells and sing unique family songs to guide their livestock to drink.
Living Cultural GeographyNorthern Flight Charters
Access is highly exclusive. Most travelers charter directly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to private airstrips inside the Namunyak Conservancy, including Sarara or Kalama.
Private Wilderness Fly-InsExploring the Pristine Zones
Because of its elevation gradients, the Matthews Range exhibits highly distinct botanical zones, starting from low sandy riverbeds up to moss-draped, primeval cloud forests.
Montane Cloud Canopy
Ascending past 1,800 meters brings you into a mist-shrouded jungle of podocarpus trees, wild orchids, and dense hanging mosses. This silent canopy forms a critical habitat for elusive melanistic (black) leopards.
Primeval Cycad Groves
The slopes of the Matthews Range shelter dense forests of the critically endangered cycad species, *Encephalartos tegulaneus*. Standing tall, these ancient gymnosperms date back millions of years.
Dry Luggas & Water Holes
The base of the mountain is crisscrossed by sandy “luggas” (dry riverbeds). Edged by giant wild fig trees, these basins host underground springs, serving as natural tracking roads for forest elephants and wild dogs.
Rare Wildlife of the Forest Range
Deep isolation has protected several of Africa’s highly endangered species. Explore the priority tracking targets in this pristine highland forest.
Highland Forest Elephants
Unlike savannah herds, these elephants scale the steep slopes of the Matthews Range to feed on lush podocarpus forests and drink from mountain springs.
Melanistic Leopards
The dense, shadowy cloud cover of the upper montane slopes makes the Matthews Range an ideal hiding ground for rare black leopards.
African Painted Wild Dogs
Namunyak serves as a secure sanctuary for strong, free-roaming packs of wild dogs that use the rocky ravines for denning.
De Brazza’s & Butterflies
Over 150 species of butterflies reside here, alongside spectacular birds and shy tree canopy residents like the De Brazza’s monkey.
The Sacred Samburu Singing Wells
In the dry dry seasons, water sources retreat deep beneath dry sandy beds surrounding the range. To sustain their cattle, Samburu warriors hand-excavate wells up to ten meters deep.
Each warrior sings a unique, customized family melody down the deep wells. Recognising their master’s song, family cattle files emerge from the dust to drink. Cameras and recordings are respectfully restricted, preserving this sacred ritual.
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
Housed inside Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Reteti is Africa’s first community-owned elephant rescue sanctuary, rehabilitating orphaned calves for release back to the range forests.
Natural Rock Pool Swimming
Hike deep into the silent montane valleys guided by armed Samburu scouts to swim in completely clear, natural rock pools fed by pure mountain springs.
Namunyak Conservancy Model
A standard for communal wildlife integration. Leasing fees and high-end ecotourism beds directly provide jobs, healthcare, and education for the Samburu tribal landholders.
Rare Black Leopard Tracking
Join trained conservation rangers using camera traps, trail signs, and footprint analyses to monitor the mysterious black leopards of the forest slopes.
